Sprocket: How the Rocket City Trash Pandas’ Mascot Turned an Off-Season Trash Can Into Must-See Content

2023 Mascot Hall of Fame Best Video Short Award Winner

Sprocket is the official mascot of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, competing in the Southern League of Minor League Baseball (MiLB). The Trash Pandas play their home games at Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama — just outside Huntsville, which earned the “Rocket City” nickname from its deep ties to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. space program.

The franchise launched in 2020 and immediately generated national attention for its boldly weird branding, because naming your team after trash pandas takes a particular kind of confidence. Sprocket has been at the center of that identity from day one, earning the 2023 Mascot Hall of Fame Best Video Short Award (MiLB/Minor League category) for a video that required very little special effects and an awful lot of charm.

Sprocket’s Vacation Home

The premise of Sprocket’s award-winning video short is beautifully simple: after a well-deserved off-season of rest and relaxation, Sprocket is getting ready to head back to work, and his off-season home is, naturally, a trash can. The video was released as a commercial and across social media in the weeks leading up to the team’s opening home stand, designed to build anticipation and give fans a behind-the-scenes peek at Sprocket’s life away from the ballpark.

It worked. The video captured exactly the kind of self-aware, playful personality that has made the Trash Pandas brand one of the most talked-about in minor league baseball,  leaning fully into the absurdity of a raccoon mascot who genuinely loves trash cans and making no apologies for it whatsoever.

Branding That Commits to the Bit

The Rocket City Trash Pandas are a case study in the power of fully committing to an unconventional identity. From the name to the logo to Sprocket’s video content, every element of the brand says the same thing: we know exactly who we are, and we’re having more fun than anyone else. Sprocket’s Mascot Hall of Fame recognition reflects how well that philosophy translates into content that fans actually want to watch.

Raccoons, the real-life inspiration for Sprocket, are remarkably intelligent animals capable of solving complex puzzles and remembering solutions for up to three years. Sprocket has presumably applied this intelligence to finding the most comfortable trash cans in the greater Huntsville area.
