Profile
The Phillie Phanatic is the gold standard — the mascot that all other mascots aspire to be. Created by Harrison/Erickson (the same firm behind Big Bird) and debuted on April 25, 1978, the Phanatic essentially defined what a modern sports mascot could be. He was founded by David Raymond, who later created the Mascot Hall of Fame itself. He has been voted the best mascot in baseball, survived a landmark copyright lawsuit, and remains the template against which all others are measured.
Fun Facts
- The Phanatic was created by the Harrison/Erickson design firm, co-founded by Bonnie Erickson — a key designer from Jim Henson’s Muppets team who was responsible for Miss Piggy, Statler, and Waldorf.
- His design was updated in 2020 amid a copyright lawsuit between the Phillies and the creators — the new Phanatic has lighter green fur, less fur on his hands, and a blue tail, though his personality remained exactly the same.
- David Raymond, the original Phanatic performer from 1978 to 1993, went on to found the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2005 — making the Phanatic the reason the Hall exists at all, and earning his own character a spot in the inaugural class.
