Profile

Clutch was named after Houston’s “Clutch City” nickname — earned when the Rockets won back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. His creator and original performer, University of Delaware alumnus Robert Boudwin, performed in over 1,500 NBA games across 21 seasons. Clutch is perhaps best known nationally from a 2008 viral moment in which he consoled a fan after a spectacularly failed on-court marriage proposal — then casually grabbed a beer on the way out.

Fun Facts

  • Clutch was created by Robert Boudwin, a UD alumnus who also created and performed YoUDee (University of Delaware) before taking the Rockets role — making Delaware a surprising cradle of iconic mascots.
  • The viral 2008 marriage-proposal moment earned Clutch global attention: the proposee said no and stormed off, Clutch walked the stunned man off the court, and grabbed someone’s beer to hand him. The clip circulated for years.
  • Clutch won NBA Mascot of the Year in 2005 and 2013, and the 2021 edition went to the current (unnamed) performer — meaning the character has now outlasted a generational turnover while staying on top.
