Profile
Big Red is perhaps the most delightfully unidentifiable mascot in all of college sports. WKU intentionally left his species undefined — he’s simply described as a “lovable, furry red blob” — and the mystery is a feature, not a bug. That ambiguity hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of WKU’s most beloved symbols since his 1979 debut.
Fun Facts
- WKU officially describes Big Red as a ‘large, red, furry creature of unknown origin.’ His vague species description has been maintained deliberately for decades, letting fans project whatever meaning they want onto him.
- Despite — or because of — his unusual appearance, Big Red was selected as one of the top 10 college mascots in the country by multiple national polls and was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007.
- Big Red was created by a WKU student in 1979 for a campus mascot contest. His design was chosen over several more conventional animal options, which says a lot about the WKU spirit.
